UAAF is a member and the lead agency of the South London African Health initiative
(SLAHI), and a member of the LSL men’s health promotion project consortium.

The South London African Health Initiative SLAHI
SLAHI is a consortium of eleven African Voluntary organisations providing Health
Promotion services to the African communities in the South London boroughs of
Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham and Wandswarth, based in Southwark. The member organisations
and their role in this consortium are:
Uganda Aids Action Fund (UAAF)
To provide a service that will improve the health, fitness and self-esteem and
quality of life of the African community.
African Adv African Community Involvement Association (ACIA)
To develop and deliver culturally appropriate support and health promotion services
for African men in order to improve their sexual and reproductive health status
and ultimately that of their families and communities.
African Family Support Services (AFSS)
To improve the quality of life, welfare and social status of African youth in
the London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Wandsworth through the
provision of education and skills training.
Anyadwe Children and Family Welfare Association (Anyadwe)
To improve the mental and physical health of the disadvantaged, marginalised African
communities in the London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Wandsworth
through the organisation of training and activities in cultural and recreational
activities.
African Refugee and Community Health Research Organisation (ARCHRO)
To promote greater awareness and understanding of healthy living and behaviour
change required to reduce the incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD), obesity
and stroke risk factors in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Wandsworth. London
African Volunteer Network (LAVN)
To reduce the incidence of food poisoning and diet-related diseases among the
target community through the provision of a training programme.
Positive Care Link (PCL)
To support Africans socially excluded and disadvantaged by disease and disability
by boosting their confidence and facilitating them to develop new skills and
therefore become employable.
To provide a pool of skilled African workers.
Taifa Community Care Project (TCCP)
To increase the chances of the target community of getting employment in the
care setting and therefore improve their health enabling the development of
more culturally appropriate social care services for Africans.
Uganda Refugee Welfare Association (URWA)
To promote, improve and enhance the health standards of the African youth in the
London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham (LSL) and Wandsworth.
Vanguard Health Services (VHS)
To provide culturally appropriate information on health and related psychosocial
issues to the African community in Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham and Wandsworth,
through a community health radio programme, the development of a Healthy Living
Resource Centre and the provision of Internet training.
African advocacy Foundation (AAF)
To produce a monthly newsletter to improve the uptake of community health services
and activities, improve the knowledge, and influence the attitudes and behaviour
of African communities in the London boroughs of, Lambeth, Southwark, Lewisham
and Wandsworth around various health issues.
This overview Your Worshipful, gives you some idea about UAAF, SLAHI and the work
we do to serve the needs of our communities. You will of course have a chance
to speak to the SLAHI Health Initiative Manager and to the UAAF staff to get a
better feel of the services we deliver.
SLAHI is currently located at the UAAF office. The main funder of SLAHI is the
New Opportunity Fund(NOF), under the Health Living Centre programme and Uganda
AIDS Action Fund is the Lead agency and fund holder of NOF funding. Lloyds TSB
also has also funded a full post for the SLAHI project for a year.
